Ingredients (1 serving):
1½ oz (45 ml) Irish whiskey
4 oz (120 ml) hot brewed black coffee (fresh and strong)
2 tsp brown sugar (or white, but brown adds depth)
Heavy cream (lightly whipped) – about 1 oz (30 ml), floated on top
Equipment Needed:
Heatproof glass (Irish coffee glass or stemmed mug)
Spoon
Small whisk or handheld frother (for the cream)
Kettle or coffee maker
Instructions:
Warm the glass:
Fill your Irish coffee glass with hot water, let it sit for a minute, then discard the water. This keeps the drink hot longer.
Add sugar and coffee:
Add 2 tsp brown sugar to the warm glass.
Pour in 4 oz (120 ml) of freshly brewed hot black coffee.
Stir until the sugar dissolves completely.
Add Irish whiskey:
Pour in 1½ oz (45 ml) of good-quality Irish whiskey (like Jameson, Bushmills, or Tullamore D.E.W.).
Stir gently to blend.
Float the cream:
Lightly whip the heavy cream until it's just thickened but still pourable (not stiff).
Using the back of a spoon, slowly pour the cream over it so it floats on top of the drink without mixing in.
Serve:
Do not stir after adding the cream. The beauty of an Irish Coffee is sipping the hot, sweet whiskey-laced coffee through the cool, velvety cream.
Tips for the Perfect Irish Coffee:
Use freshly brewed, hot coffee—preferably medium or dark roast.
Brown sugar adds a subtle molasses flavor, enhancing the drink.
Don’t overwhip the cream—it should be silky and just thick enough to float.
Always float the cream rather than stirring it in, for that authentic experience.
